UK money runs on Direct Debits and a payday that is almost never the 1st. US templates pretend otherwise, and the surprise overdraft lands anyway. This UK Monthly Budget Planner is built around both: every Direct Debit listed with its due date, the total leaving your account BEFORE payday always visible, and Council Tax handled the way it actually bills.
What it does for you:
– Start Here — 5-minute setup: enter your monthly take-home pay (in £) and your payday day-of-month.
– Direct Debits — every Direct Debit and standing order in one tracker: amount, frequency, due day. Monthly Equivalent and Due Before Payday calculate themselves, so you always know what leaves before your wages land.
– Council Tax done properly — it usually runs in 10 instalments (Apr–Jan); the Start Here guide shows how to budget it and how to treat the two payment-free months in Feb/Mar deliberately, not accidentally.
– Expense Log — log everyday spending once; the monthly picture builds itself.
– Monthly Budget — zero-based monthly budget in UK categories, with Actual filled automatically from the Expense Log.
– Dashboard — the two numbers that prevent overdraft surprises, up front: Total Monthly DDs and the amount leaving BEFORE payday.
– Monthly Summary — 12 months of budget vs actual in one view.
– Sample debits pre-filled so every formula works the moment you open it; formula cells are locked (password disclosed in Start Here) and every formula is error-wrapped.
What’s inside (.xlsx, works in Excel AND Google Sheets): Start Here · Direct Debits (every debit, every due date) · Expense Log · Monthly Budget (zero-based) · Dashboard · Monthly Summary (12 months).
